Job Description

Space is looking for a friendly, patient and motivated Digital Inclusion Worker to join our Community Learning & Development team.

Our digital inclusion project supports people across South West Edinburgh to build the confidence and skills to thrive in a digital world. Our aim is to help people realise their potential through learning, connection, removing barriers, and opening the door to opportunities.

You don’t need to be a digital guru to carry out this role. A good basic knowledge of how to use digital devices, and confidence with using common applications and online tools is important, but your ability to connect with and support learners is the key skill.

The Digital Inclusion Worker will provide face-to-face digital support via group and one-to-one sessions, delivered within The Broomhouse Hub, working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. You will build positive connections with learners in order to develop their practical digital abilities with the aim of increasing their independence and improving their wellbeing and quality of life.

No two days will be the same. In this role, you will be helping people to carry out a variety of digital tasks including using a smartphone/tablet/laptop, searching and applying for jobs, locating services and downloading/using apps to support daily life and save money.

* Hours are mostly on Wednesdays, as the group drop-in sessions run on Wednesday afternoons, with flexibility for two to three hours per week to be worked on a different day.

 

Main tasks:

  • Designing, planning, delivering digital group drop-in sessions to meet project objectives
  • Carrying out meaningful consultation with group participants to ensure content is engaging and appropriate for their needs, whilst balancing funder requirements
  • Providing targeted one-to-one support to learners
  • Creating promotional material and networking locally to attract people to the service
  • Carrying out all project administration, including maintaining database of accurate records
  • Evaluating progress of project to demonstrate impact and inform funder reporting
  • Staying abreast of local job vacancies, work placements, further education, volunteering opportunities to signpost
  • Recruiting and supporting project volunteers
  • Ensuring the safety of participants and volunteers through assessing risks and applying safeguarding practices
  • Working as part of wider Community Learning & Development team to share knowledge and best practice

Skills and Qualifications

Essential

  • a minimum of 1 years’ experience of providing a support service in a community environment
  • experience of designing, delivering and evaluating drop-in learning sessions to support people to develop their skills and achieve their goals
  • be able to articulate the importance of digital skills as a vital life skill, and how this is linked to quality of life and wellbeing
  • a strong desire to support people to develop their digital skills and confidence
  • confidence in the use of Microsoft packages – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams
  • be highly organised in order to keep accurate records within the funder database (helix) and provide relevant data for funder reporting
  • ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise own workload with minimal supervision
  • have an understanding of Health & Safety practices including Safeguarding of Vulnerable People and carrying out risk assessments
  • excellent English communications skills – listening, writing and speaking Have a can do attitude, be adaptable and ready to take on new challenges
  • have excellent interpersonal skills and confidence to naturally form relationships with a range of people of all ages and walks of life
  • be prepared to live Space values and nurture a culture of compassion and kindness
  • be respectful and patient with all people, whatever their background

Desirable

  • have an understanding of community education ethos (CLD standards)
  • experience of recruiting and supporting volunteers
  • current knowledge of support services and opportunities across Edinburgh in order to signpost learners

Qualifications and training

  • A professional qualification in community education, or another topic you feel is relevant and beneficial to this role, or be able to demonstrate similar level of knowledge through work experience

Pension:             5% employers’ contribution

Annual leave:     32 days annual leave, increasing to 37 days in year two of employment (pro-
                             rata); includes some set public holidays and two-week closure over
