Edinburgh College is one of the largest providers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses in Scotland. All college-based classes are British Council accredited. We offer campus-based ESOL classes from Beginner to Advanced levels. We offer general English, employability and exam preparation classes.
What does the support look like?
Our ESOL courses are for people who speak English as a second language and are living in the UK on a permanent or long-term basis.
The courses are designed to help you improve your English and confidence to go on to further training or enter employment.
What will I get?
You will work towards achieving Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) national certificates for your level. Level 5 students can work towards the SQA National 5 exam or the IELTS exam.
The ESOL for employability courses include a work placement.
When
College semesters run from late August to mid-January and from mid-January to June. Some ESOL courses are year-round (August to June) and some are for one semester (August to January or January to June).
Full-time courses are 3 days a week, part-time 2 days a week and evening courses are 2 evenings a week.

What can I do next?
You can progress through the ESOL levels (2 to 6). After achieving certain results in Level 5, you could progress to some mainstream Edinburgh College courses.
After completing higher level ESOL courses and passing the relevant exams, you may also be able to progress to University.
