Tell us about your new job
I recently started a part-time role as a Clinical Administrator at St Columba’s Hospice, where I support the team in delivering high-quality palliative care. My work involves co-ordinating patient information, appointments and referrals, ensuring accurate and timely documentation, and helping maintain smooth communications across the medical and wider teams. I value being part of a service that makes such a meaningful difference to patients and their families.
How did you find out about the Parental Employability Support team?
I found out about the Parental Employability Support (PES) team through a referral from FEDCAP in Edinburgh, after a full year of searching for employment. Lucia in the PES team immediately understood my situation and, with a friendly, enthusiastic, and genuine commitment, became my mentor. She guided me not only in securing a job but also in rebuilding my self-confidence.
What were your expectations?
My expectations were modest. After a year of struggling to find work, I hoped for guidance, support, and direction. I wanted someone to help me understand the Scottish job market, improve my confidence, and recognise the value of my professional background. I did not expect the process to be so personalised and empowering, but I hoped for a chance to start again, regain stability, and move closer to meaningful employment.
Did you have any personal or professional goals when working with the PES team?
Yes, I had both personal and professional goals:
- Personally, I wanted to rebuild confidence in my abilities after a long and difficult period of unemployment.
- Professionally, I wanted to improve my employability skills, and secure meaningful work.
- I also wanted to start the process of having my Colombian qualifications recognised in the UK, which is essential for continuing my professional development.
Working with the PES team has helped me move towards these goals and given me a clearer path forward.
How did the support given by your PES officer helped you to find a job?
I am absolutely convinced that Lucia made a real difference in my journey. I was in a vulnerable position, having devoted myself entirely to my family and home, and had spent two years searching for a job without success. Lucia’s empathy, dedication, and close guidance allowed her to understand my situation and support me every step of the way. Her practical advice, encouragement, and regular contact gave me the confidence, motivation, and skills needed to secure employment.
Has this programme had any impact on your wider life or wellbeing?
The PES programme has had a profound impact on my life and wellbeing. I regained my self-belief, and started reconnecting with my skills and experience. The programme has provided renewed motivation, a clearer sense of direction, and the ability to pursue my career goals while managing my family responsibilities. It has helped me feel empowered, valued, and more fully integrated into the Edinburgh community.
Would you encourage others to contact the PES team? Why?
Absolutely. I would highly recommend the available PES support. The service is free, personalised to each individual’s needs, and provides one-to-one support while also recognising the human side of the journey. They help with job applications, CVs, interview preparation, access to funding, and connection to other helpful services.
It has had a profoundly positive impact on my family and I —improving our wellbeing, mental health, and family finances. Without a regular income, day-to-day life can be very challenging, and the support I received through PES made a real and lasting difference.
