Garry talks about his experience of working with young people and why he chose to get involved with The Edinburgh Guarantee.

We know how important a little bit of financial support can be for a business when recruiting and training young people and current employees.  We have identified a range of wage incentives, also known as Employer Recruitment Incentives (ERIs), and other available funding for workforce training.

Skills Development Scotland - Modern Apprenticeships:

  • Modern Apprenticeships are available to anyone over 16
  • Applicants over 25 can receive funding, though it must be in specific sectors. A list of these can be found on the Skills Development Scotland website
  • The training programme must be listed in the Modern Apprentice framework, which totals over 70 different vocational and competency-based courses
  • All training covered under the MA framework contains the following three components:
  1. A relevant SVQ or alternative competency based qualification
  2. Core Skills
  3. Industry specific training.

The funding is typically paid to the organisations providing the training. However, for more information regarding the training providers, employing an MA and the funding process in general, contact Skills Development Scotland on 0800 783 6000 or visit the Skills Development Scotland website.

Skills Development Scotland, Adopt an Apprentice:

Adopt an Apprentice is a financial incentive available to a business who employs a redundant apprentice for at least 12 months allowing them to complete their apprenticeship and gain their qualification.

The business gains a motivated and skilled employee plus £2,000 to help towards wage costs. For the Oil and Gas Industry, or from the wider supply chain in Engineering or Engineering Construction only, the incentive is £5,000.

To discuss the Adopt an Apprentice scheme further, call the employer helpline on 0800 783 6000.
